Oberhaslach

Our village has been rewarded "3 flowers" in a national ranking. Oberhaslach is a charming village of 1504 inhabitants. It is where the hermit Saint Florent took up residence near the present chapel of Saint Florent (eighteenth and nineteenth centuries).

The castle and the waterfall from Nideck

Wasserfall von NideckLocated at the foot of the Nideck castle, a 25-meter cliff goes straight down, showing a magnificent view on the Bruche valley. The rock is more than 560 million years old and stream flowing out on it form a beautiful waterfall. It was was a much-liked and often-visited place in the XIXth century and it gave birth to the legend of the "Géants du Nideck", a story written by the GRIMM brothers and made famous by the poet Adalbert de CHASSIMO

You can also find the Ringelstein castle, the Hohenstein castle and the Ringelsberg dry-stone surrounding wall

The Nideck giants

In 2003, the association « Les Géants du Nideck » organised a symposium of sculptures with 8 international artists in Oberhaslach. The artists’ main purpose was to build huge sandstone works with the “Giants” theme in mind. The legend of the Nideck Giants is part of the Alsatian heritage. Told by Charlotte ENGELHARDT and written by the brothers Grimm, it was put in verse by poet Adalbert of CHASSIMO.

The Charterhouse with its historical museum and the Bugatti Foundation located at 16 km

The Archaeology, Art and History Museum is inside the former Charterhouse monastery. (1598-1792). The collections show the history of the Bruche Valley. One area is entirely dedicated to to the Bugatti Foundation. It explains the career of the famous carmaker Ettore Bugatti (1881-1947).

Discovery Tour "On the Bugatti Trail"

You will discover a trail around the key sites of Molsheim, Dorlisheim and Duppigheim, where the Bugatti Family left their marks. The 20th century famous carmaker gave his name to the Bugatti Cars, whose prestige and ingenuity are acclaimed worldwide. Go through the 10 stages and you will read or hear the stories which marked the life and career of Ettore Bugatti.

"Alsace Moselle" Memorial in Schirmeck at 14km

When you visit the Alsace Moselle Memorial you journey through the heart of contemporary European history. It presents the many stages in the history of the people of Alsace Moselle who changed nationality four times between 1870 and 1945, with a special focus on the years between 1939 and 1945.

The Mutzig Fort at 13km

Strasbourg Cathedral with its Astronomical Clock at 41km

"The cathedral is based on the foundations of an old basilica built in 1015 by Bishop Wernher von Habsburg. The Cathedral was destroyed by a fire and Strasbourg authorities decided to begin massive work, that was to last for three centuries. Started in 1176, they finished in 1439 with the achievement of the spire. With a height of 142 m, Notre-Dame of Strasbourg was the highest building in Christendom until XIXth century. "

The Astronomical Clock, masterpiece of the Renaissance, is the result of a collaboration between artists, mathematicians and technicians, sculptors, painters and automaton-creators. The actual mechanism dates from 1842. The most impressive performance takes place every day at noon thirty, when the complete set of automata parade in front of the Christ.

Mont Sainte Odile at 40km:

The Mont Sainte Odile is with Strasbourg cathedral the most-visited monument in the Bas-Rhin. It is dedicated to the patron saint of Alsace and is also frequented by pilgrims who gather here, and by the tourists who like the view at the top at the altitude of 763 M. The buildings date back from the 17° century but other buildings are older. The site has one church and four chapels.

Haut Koenigsbourg at 55km:

Haut KoenigsbourgTowering above the Alsatian plain, le château du Haut Koenigsbourg is the most known castle in Alsace and one of the most visited monuments in Alsace. Le château du Haut Koenigsbourg was restored at the request of Emperor Wilhelm II from 1900, making its originality and its attraction, despite the controversy concerning the restoration. A masterpiece.

Hiking and Walking :

It is an ideal site with over 300km of tracks waymarked by the Club Vosgien. The area is also crossed by some of the major trans-Vosges hiking trails. You will also find themed trails such as:

- the botanical trail: Nideck and Romanswiller
- the vineyard trail: Traenheim, Balbronn
- the discovery trail: Westhoffen
- the sculpture Symposium Trails: Oberhaslach "Le Sandweg" and Wangenbourg
- "Le Chemin du Bois Baron".

120km of tracks divided into 5 tours with 3 levels of difficulty.

Cycle touring :

Cycling for all levels… 8 tours of 7 to 60km depending on your level (from 60 to 1041 m).

Climbing :

Some ten rocks are fitted with pitons and equipped for all types of climbing.

Cross-country skiing :

You have 2 possibilities: Cross-country skiing at the Schneeberg (17km from Oberhaslach). Nordic hiking trails (75km) are sign posted, but not prepared in order to maintain part of their wildness.

There are 2 starting points. Engenthal / Panorama (460m) and the pass of the Pandours, col des Pandours (662m).

You can also discover the Massif du Schneeberg in snowshoes. It is possible to book snowshoes at the tourist office in Wangenbourg/Engenthal.
